World Chess Championship
December, 13, 2001

Hi dear fans of chess!
We continue compilation of the games of the World Championships.

Anand - Ivanchuk
Morning after a holiday...
As well as in the second game, Anand evades from the basic continuations of struggle - it is not so uneasy to struggle after the birthday - a headache and so on...
The move 3. Nc3 does not allow for Black to apply some variations - and in one of them, in Chelyabinsk variation the businesses of Anand develops very often not so good... Ivanchuk closed the centre after 3... e5 - really again fast drawn game? Vassily is not the most convenient opponent for Vishy, and the rapid chess is absolutely not the weakest component of him... But it would be desirable for all of us, certainly, that the match between these contenders proceeded and proceeded:) - so the hope on fighting is still alive - that it is impossible to tell about other pair...
The opening's review.
The hope dies last.
I suspect Anand did not want to play rapid chess. He remembers his lost match of the Gran-prix stage in Moscow. Shorter he decided to fight in this game. But it is not so simple to fight with Ivanchuk, especially when he is in the good shape. As Svidler, Ivanchuk did not wait rival's novelty in unexpected for himself variation 3.Nc3 e5, but he used the novelty by himself! In reply to standart manoeuvre Nd2-f1(knihgt is going to d5-field, simultaneously delivering the f-pawn) Ivanchuk used the analogous manoeuvre Nd7-b6. It looks very interesting! Met before 7...Bg4!? 8.f3, and the most widespreading 7...0-0 8.Ne3.
Deserved attention 13.Be3 - giving the space for manoeuvres of the dark-squared bishop.
After opening White had a little better position - two bishops and the weakness of light squares were compensated by closed pawn structure. Unpretendous move 17.Qc2 and here Vassily... "has slept". This evidently weakened Anand and it looks here he decided to play only for a victory. But the next moves looks very very strange. If the moves 18.h3 h6 were made very quick, that it is necessary to spend much time for 19.c4?! After 20...Bd5 I had a feeling that already Ivanchuk played for a victory, and attention! Vishy did not understand it! Such moves as a4?!, Qb3?!, Bc3?! could bring the success with anybody else only not with Ivanchuk. After doubling of the rooks on f-file, Ivanchuk showed who has advantage, and knockouted Anand by 26... f4! and 27...f3!! According to the following Anand could not keep the blows and he defenced unsuccessfully. And Ivanchuk was irrepressible.

Ponomariov - Svidler
Game on deduction.
In reply to rather unexpected 2... e6 - it is usual in Sicilian defence Svidler plays through 2... d6, passing in Naidorf variation, Ponomariov answers not less unexpected 3.c3!? - the Sveshnikov's ideas live and win! Leading in the account - young ukrainian as though shows to the contender, try! - win against me?! But this initial thought of Eugeny Ellinovich today any more so is urgent - move c2-c3 "has acquired" with the extensive theory - and at all not worse than any other continuation ( normal!). Though nothing can be told - White's position very strong...
By it is sad for me - I am sick for Svidler!
The opening's review:
That is good cowboy, who shoots by first...
The opening's choice of Ponomariov has appeared on a rarity successful. You see what the modern chess is - who whom has deceived by first, that another and... "dances". In a well known branching Bc4 of c2-c3 variation of Sicilian defence after 10. Qe4 there were many continuations... but Peter has chosen new - the 12th (!) - 10... Qa5. The move looks rather suspicious - but it gets in a choice of the moves - candidates of the analytical module.
So the prepared novelty, but faster - is necessary to guess - or it for a long time simply professional aspiration to confuse game - passing in unfamiliar position to BOTH of the contenders (from well familiar for WHITE). Usually instead of 10... Qa5 met 10... Kh8,10... Bd7, 10... de... etc. - it is difficult to choose the strongest move in the not enough investigated position.
Further in the game after 11. Nbd2 Bd7 12. Bb3! White at once began to disturb black queen, having grasped the game initiative. Black spent precious time... After centralization 14. Ne4 it seemed, that by White force will force Black to agree to a drawn game... Svidler has offered a drawn game by himself after the forced series of the moves begun by computer impact 14... Nd4!!? It seems, the spring of Black was developed, but... An intermediate move 16. Bh6! with the subsequent jumping with tempo of one of the hanging pieces 17. Nc5 - resulted to the ending with an extra-pawn at Black, but it is quickly lost. In a result the agreement on a drawn game has followed after 18... Qd4 very much in time for the petersburger - after 19. Qd4 ed 20. Nf8 gh 21. Ne6 fe 22. Rad1 Nc7 (to defence both pawns) 23. Rfe1 Rd6 (except for threat e6-pawn White wanted to attack on d-pawn by the move Re4) 24. Rc1! - simple variation from the computer - 24.. Rd7 25. Re6! White wins back the pawn, keeping positional advantage - best pawn's structure and bishop against knight.
And it is a pity...

Zhu Chen - Kosteniuk
Lolita wins!
The opening of new prompt of a "chess Kurnikova's" site probably has raised mood to the Russian, with which it was necessary to recoup. To recoup at any cost - and she has made it! The truth her play from time to time reminded Anand's play, and the play of Chinesse reminded Ivanchuk's play... But for the ICC's superblitzplayer and her numerous admirers today all was finished successfully - not having sustained a pressure Zhu Chen "yawned" simple tactical impact and here has lost. And that you see 3080 against 2696 almost 400 items difference in a rating. A rating www.chessclub.com - of course.
On a course of the game:
the Black's opening choice - " the Stonewalll " is very interesting!? And it when is necessary to win... Zhu Chen played all is underlined strong - as learned. An exchange of dark-squared bishops on the a3 - field, and how here to win by Black... And here White began to prevent for Black to play chess (instead of whether easier to play itself?) 12.c5 - Zhu Chen does not give to remove the bishop by b7-b6, but gives for rival the counter - play, which Kosteniuk used moving 15... b6! and then 19... А5. There comes a phase of manoeuvres - or accumulation of time? Unless on 23. Ne5 deserved attention 23... ab - at rest to not carp:) Kosteniuk risks by move 35... g5?! - hardly at the equal account such move could to appear on the board. But for the achievement of the result in struggle all means are good! (and in life - is it Alexandra?) Black's g5-pawn hangs and hangs - and Zhu Chen does not capture it - but on the account of variations with a capture leaves more time and forces - that means play on ICC!
The culminating moment has come on the 40th move - the move 40. Qc3?? gives to us an opportunity to look the tie-breaks - and there look and blitz beside - glory glory ICC!:) But up to blitz it is necessary still to live... More strong - Alaxandra!
All good - protect yourself! Remain with us.
