Sergei Ionov GM Sergey Ionov annotates the games of the 10th round:

Anand - Kasparov 1/2
In the game Anand - Kasparov was played fashionable presently Naidorf variation with 6. Be3. Kasparov has replyed habitual for himself 6... e5 (earlier in the game against Ponomariov in this tournament he has selected the scheme of development with e6 and Nc6 and had in the opening certain problems). By 9-th move 9.g4 Anand has showed his mood to fight in this game. Although White could move 9. Qd2 b5 10.a4 b4 11. Nd5 Bxd5 12.exd5 Nb6 13. Bxb6 Qxb6 14.a5 Qb7 15. Ra4 Rb6 16. Bc4 and, further playing Qd3 and Qd2, alternately attacking black pawns a6 and b4, to fix the draw. On 13th move Black had preferred to change his Knight-h5 on g3-square, as also met 13... Nf4 brought Black only afflictions.
Further Kasparov has carried out d5 and has received good counter-play. Now both Kings have no reliable place. By 21th move 21... f5 Kasparov has put the contender before a dilemma. If Anand has taken enpassant, certainly after 22.gxf6 Nxf6 pawn center of Black would lose harmony, but his Knight passed to one more active position and at the same time solved problem of defence of K-side.
Anand has prefered to castle, and Black immediately has reacted 22... b3, having begun to open the white King position, if Kasparov will be able to connect the Rooks, before White there can be hard problems.
Further there was a change of position. On the board instead of sharp midgame - not less substantial ending. Position of Black looks more preferable in view of weakness of white pawns on the K-side. If white it will be not possible to create play on opposite side against constraining his position pawn's pair a4 and b3, The position of Anand can become bad.
On 29-th move Black has undertaken the forced operation. Which after numerous exchanges has lead to the position with an extra-pawn at White and large difficulties at him , consisting in the position of his King taking place offside of the game and weakness of the pawns of K-side. Certainly on 31-st move was more poorly arising Bg5 in view of 32. Ng6 Kg6 33. Kd2 and the white King entered into game.
White could find the saving position with Rook on h3 and g3 squares and Bishop on d2-square. To break this fortress Black can not. In the final position after Rg4 Rf3 Ra4 Rf1 Ke2 Rb1 there is a mutual destruction of the forces.

Adams - Shirov 1-0
In the game Adams - Shirov White has selected on 3th move 3. Bb5, avoiding apparently the Chelyabinsk variant. In the answer Black has selected one of the 3 most popular continuations 3... e6 (other opportunities 3... g6 and 3... d6). By 5-th move 5.c3 Adams has found out the aspiration to construction of the strong centre (other opportunity consist in 5. Re1 a6 6. Bxc6 Nxc6 7.d4 cxd4 8, Nxd4). This aspiration he has confirmed and on the following move, having receded Bishop on a4-square, was possible also 6. Be2 d5 7.exd5 with position in spirit of Sicilian with c3.
By 8-th move 8. Qe2 White has continued the begun line. After 8.d4 cd4 White it should or after 9.cxd4 Nb4 to give back Bishop, or after 9. Nd4 to leave dream about pawn's centre. Besides 8... Ng6 met also 8... d5 9.e5 d4, but then the Bishop of White has excellent position on e4-square whence renders pressure on both sides of Black. Though Black by 10... Nh4 it was possible to exchange one minor piece and it a little to facilitate the defence, all the same position of White deserves preference. It is easier under the covering of the strong centre to carry out a regrouping of the forces.
Further there was an exchange of the black Bishop on white Knight, that has not facilitated defence of black position - Black has a passive and unpromising position. White will combine pressure in the centre and on weak a5-pawn with preparation of attack on the King of Black at absence of the effective counter-play of Black.
Black up to the first control was not possible even to hold on. By the combined attack on all board Adams has achieved a convincing victory.

Ivanchuk - Vallejo Pons 1-0
In the game Ivanchuk - Vallejo Pons the Paulsen variation was played. Angry by an insulting defeat in the previous round in the game against Shirov, Ivanchuk has selected aggressive continuation, having shown the purpose - black King, instead of usual attack on the Q-side and in the center.
The aggressions to intentions of White were promoted also by the move 7... Be7 (usually try to play 7... g6 - after that the position of the King on the K-side looks more protected). With loss of time Vallejo has returned to this plan by Re8, g6 and Bf8. But White for this time, having removed the Knight from the centre on the K-side by e5 and Ng5, has created dangerous threats.
It won't be easy for Black to find worthy answer on Ivanchuk attack.
White it was possible to win the pawn and to keep the strong initiative. After the sacrifice of the Knight the position of Black became lost and after the move e5 (defending from Rf4) followed Qd7 and young Spaniard had to resign.
