Sergei Ionov GM Sergei Ionov annotates the game 5:

Moscow,
January, 21, 2002

In this game Black has threatened Marshall attack.
But Ponomariov has decided to not get involved in theoretical dispute and has selected instead of 8.c3 slow 8.h3 Bb7 9.d3 d6 10.a3 then white it is difficult to expect on achievement of advantage.
Ivanchuk has selected regrouping of the pieces, characteristic for Breyer variation 10... Nb8 and Nbd7, and then has begun capture of the centre and restriction of activity white lightsquared bishop by c6 and d5. Gradually the pluses of the black position (greater space and freedom of manoeuvres) have begun to have an effect. After a little bit artificial manoeuvres of White (removing queen on h2-square) Ivanchuk began to move the pawns in the centre. By a serious mistake of White was move29... bxc3 then the pawns of Q-side have remained without defence. Instead of it it was necessary to play Bxc3 and on d4 - Bd2 and on Rc2 - Bc1 and then superseding the black rook by Bb3. Now after loss ╞╔Х╙╗ the position carries technical character.
Further in the game there were improbable events, which have resulted in a victory of white.
And it is a pity, as now sports result of a match it is not enough at whom causes doubts.
