GM Konstantin Aseev annotates the 12th round.
Hello, dear friends!
Today in fact already after the round is over I will tell you about the peripeteias of the 12th round - last but one. I would like to start with the game:
Morozevich - Van Wely
What can I say about the instant result of this meeting? One remembers an old anecdote: only an excited man could twice tread on the same rake. 1-0 - in essence without a fight.
Gelfand - Dreev
The game only still started when after the numerous changes had arrived to a peaceful harbor.
Timman - Kasimdzhanov
There was an interesting positional manoeuvre fight, where both sides tried to gain his own profit from the position and during a long time seemed that the game will be resulting. But later each of the opponents created his own bastions and drawn agreement was achieved in slightly better position for Black.
With an intrigue developed the duel:
Leko - Adams
Peter strived today to a victory with all his might, raised numerous guileful problems in Ruy Lopez however it is difficult to confuse Adams. He sacrificed a piece cooly getting a compensation of 3 pawns and after that Peter's heat ran low and we have not seen the fight's continuation. Here it crossed one's mind the words from a song: "Do you remember how all began?"
And perhaps the most interesting game of the round - the meeting between two leaders:
Grischuk - Lhalifman
A scale duel where youth had a success but after a superficial view I am not confident that Black couldn't defence with an extra pawn although White has an undoubted initiative and deserves the sacrificed pawn. I suppose you by yourselves to admire the game.
Gurevich - Piket
In this duel Gurevich who gained an advantage after the opening failed to keep it and missed a standard play with the move f7-f5 and crumbled gradually. It's difficult to be a veteran.
And at last an interesting question - will Evgenij Bareev be able to break the resistance of his opponent.
Bareev - Lautier
During the fight the Moscower had a serious advantage and serious chances for a success. After 50 moves it seemed that victory is not far but Lautier showing a perseverance managed to create some problems for White in the realization of his advantage. Nevertheless White managed to win.
