Wijk aan Zee, round 9,
January, 22, 2002.

We continue transmission of the main games of the tournament.
From today's pairs, having presented development of events, it is easily possible to choose most intriguing:
Grischuk-Morozevich
Gelfand-Bareev
Dreev-Timman
Khalifman-Leko
Lautier-Gurevich
Kasimdzhanov-Van Wely
Adams-Piket
Grischuk-Morozevich
Next Moscow fighting:) - the main competitors - persecutors will choose the strongest - will look at what here...

Gelfand-Bareev
The game with participation of the leader of the tournament cannot be bypassed by attention.

Dreev-Timman
Interesting the game will be whether or not - depends on the mood of Dreev...

Khalifman-Leko
One more game - the fight should be up to the large blood. To miss for certain it is not necessary.

Lautier-Gurevich
The partners decide extremely local tasks...

Kasimdzhanov-Van Wely
Same...

Adams-Piket
Micky for certain will try "to get" Bareev - partner most suitable! Let's look...

Second part:
So - openings from the "leaders"...

Attentively we notice for 4 games:
Grischuk-Morozevich
Morozevich continues to surprise on this tournament! By Black he has played Berlin variation (C67) - an opening becoming the main weapon of Kramnik in the won match versus Kasparov. Again new opening - and what... Simply to not find out Morozevich! The truth of the won games by Black is not observed yet - may be today? But the struggle in this game in any case will be delayed for a long time.

Gelfand-Bareev
If Bareev for certain very much even in a rate that occurs on a board at two Moscow's Alexanders " on a sort of a service " - as the trainer of the Champion BrainGames, in that opening that he has applied today, main expert - Morozevich! After "training" in the game of 7-th round by White, today Yevgenij asserts Morozevich's variation by Black!! The same "advanced" variation 9... g5 - seems a lot of time Bareev has spent in searches of a refutation for white - but... Has not found it. So why then to not play by black - with Gelfand, which is obvious not in the form... What will do Gelfand - having reputation of the powerful openingexpert?!

Khalifman-Leko
Already first moves show, that the struggle will be... more "densely":). In first 1.d4:), and you see Khalifman "serves from the both hands" - and as is known, " the serve 1.e4 " is more powerful...:) And variant with 4.g3 in queen indian has the reputation as "classical" - that is, Alexander repeats tactics on this tournament - " is played there where give ". Rare variation 5. Qa4 (E15), not promising advantage for white, is chosen by Khalifman for "checks" of the young fighter. Whether will Peter take the examine?

Adams-Piket
Russian (C42), quite good opening for a "firm suffocation". Adams is slow - all for certain will decide on the control - fast drawn game will not be.

An afteropening's stage.
And at this time in Wijk an Zee:)...
Three games already were finished in a draw.

Lautier-Gurevich
The contenders have made 17 moves for a kind and be dispatched by the peace - the result suits both.

Khalifman-Leko
Did not fight and these irreconcilable enemies. Means there are on that reasons - chess of them we shall discuss later...

Gelfand-Bareev
In view of recurrence of a position caused by an eternal attack and eternal check:), Have finished sharp opening's duel in a draw "superopening experts" . Much of food for the analysis...
Others struggle - and we while analys...
Wait for the next part!

Adams-Piket
In the eagerness to show quite good result quickly has followed to an example others the pair of fighters with participation of the leader of tournament - also has left many questions. Nothing having succeeded in " slow game " on his side of the board Micky has decided to move 20. Ne5!?? - it is not so clear, what is given back the pawn for - therefore and two question-mark. Note of exclamation - for bravery! May be it's blunder - but is trusted in it poorly... Piket has not estimated this decision too - and has taken the pawn: 20... Nd4! Adams as in anything it did not happen has continued manoeuvres - 23. Qc1, 24.g3, 25. Nd4 - well really d4-square costs the pawn?! But Piket dreamed before this game only of a drawn game - and joyfully has accepted it, when the e4-knight already could not to recede after 27.f3... But could try to struggle - SOMEHOW... Seems it is hardly for him this tournament - and for whom it is easy now? But Adams - with such play, as in two last rounds, can not be kept on the first place alredy exactly...

Dreev-Timman
Despite of draw, it is impossible to bypass by attention the game. 20 moves both contenders showed only visibility of struggle, as suddenly...The mutual tactical impacts "rushed along": 23... Nf2!?, 26. Ne5!. After total exchanges Dreev fixed perpetual check in queen ending. But what the play! And you see all complications Timman has caused - does not want the veteran to surrender! Whether still will be...

Kasimdzhanov-Van Wely
The struggle for the last place has won... the champion of Holland. After t he long forced theoretical variation in Catalan (E04) Loek has lost complex (but equal) ending by moves 26... Rd7?! 29.. Rd4? And after elegant 30. Nf5! It is possible to resign.

Grischuk-Morozevich
Here's was no struggle almost... After not clear 15... c5? Black could not do anything already... By moves 18. Rf3!, 19.h3!, 21.g4! Grischuk has paralysed the black pieces and realized extra-pawn on K-side. Here is nothing to annotate: (. First - but very serious "bell" for Morozevich - whether and it was necessary to break itself, changing the style? Think Alexander think....

The summary : Many participants of the tournament are closer by the end of competition try to play more cautios - but not everybody can do it. The struggle for the first place has become aggravated - and for the last - has finished... So it means for many - everything is in ahead...
