The most spectacular promise to be the game between two compatriots from Baku Kasparov - Radjabov . In favour of this is the difference in titles and ages and an active style of play which confess both of them.
From the result point of view very interesting is the meeting between two World Champions: Ponomariov - Kramnik . First here as compete two systems of play for the most honour title in chess and second still is fresh the recent game between the rivals in Wijk-aan-Zee, where the younger celebrated the victory.
The meeting Anand - Vallejo should answer on a question - will the young Spanish be able to play so interesting as last year or he is forced to be only a hospitable master.
As it has been expected in the game Kasparov - Radjabov at once developed a very sharp fight on the opposite flanks. With his 10th move 10...с4 Radjabov took away the strain in the center, underlining the aspiration for the attack on the queenside (in the game Szefer-Delega, Warsaw, 1996 Black played 10...h6 11. dxc5 Bxc5 12. Ned4 Nxd4). Kasparov replied sharply as well 11. g4 (his recent rival Deep Fritz even doesn't look such continuation, offering for choice 11. Ng3, 11. Nc3 or 11.b3, but preffering nevertheless the last move).
On the 21th move Radjabov sacrifices a piece 21...Ngxe5, Deep Fritz evidently don't understand it evaluating White's chances after 22.Bxe5 Nxe5 23.dxe5 Qc7 24.Qe3 Rh6 25.Bg4 Bc5 26.Qg5 d4 27.Bf3 Rf8 as +-
Probably in vain Kasparov refused to take the piece's sacrifice, his position became worse and on the 30th move Radjabov has made a very strong move 30...Qg6, forcing White to exchange the Queens and in result to remain without a piece.
In the game Ponomariov - Kramnik the World Champion FIDE avoid the principal continuations of Sicilian defence using a non pride variation 3. Bb5. Aspiring to the development of the initiative, Kramnik leaves his King in the center, sacrifices the pawn and launch a pawn attack on the rival's King. Ponomariov attempts to take the strain off, provides a break in the center 19. d4, giving the pawn back and in his turn offer the pawn sacrifice.
Nevertheless this turned out to be insufficient to equalize the chances. Black gets a pawerful pawn wedge in the center, and in addition to all Ponomariov permits a blunder: 29.Rda1 d3!, after that Kramnik passes the pawn. Well, an impressive revange for the game in Wijk-aan-Zee.
On the phone of sharply passing two first games, the meeting Vallejo - Anand went on somehow imperceptibly but here also the situation has sharped. On the 28th move Anand sacrificed the exchange, giving away the Rook for a good settled Night on e5. Desiring no to take the risk, Vallejo offer the draw.
