Konstantin Sakaev GM Konstantin Sakaev annotates the 1st game:

Kasparov - X3D Fritz
During the game Kasparov had a real advantage.
Fritz has played the opening dubiously. Before the match Kasparov told that the program react to the moves by "g" pawn in the opening poorly and it happened in this game.
The idea to take the pawn f2 with the help of the move 11...Qf6 is dubious as well. It is unlikely that the human being could choose this way. Probably it was better just to trade the Knight for the Bishop on c3 and to castle. Then White would have just a slightly better position. But this is the specific of the computer's play.
Fritz went to the sharp tactical struggle, in which White had a strong initiative. Only the further detailed analisys will show if White had concrete ways to increase the initiative. Surely, Kasparov would win this game if the human being played for Black. But Fritz could find the tactical resourses to continue the struggle. And this distrubed to Kasparov a lot to look for the concrete ways to improve his position. As result White could not find such ways and Black has got the real counter-play due to the weak postion of the white King. And it has led to the equalization of the chances in this game.
